Faculty Bios
Jeffrey B. Anderson MD, MPH
Jeffrey B. Anderson is board-certified in pediatrics and board eligible in pediatric cardiology; he has a master’s in public health with an emphasis on epidemiology. Dr. Anderson has spent the last several years working with infants with congenital heart disease with nutritional failure to better understand the etiology of their growth problems and to design interventions to improve their growth. In addition, he has obtained formal training in Quality Improvement methodology through completion of courses offered through the James M. Anderson Center for Health Systems Excellence at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
Robert H. Beekman, III MD
Dr. Robert Beekman is a Professor of Pediatric Cardiology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati. Dr. Beekman completed his pediatric internship and residency at UCLA, and his pediatric cardiology fellowship at the University of Michigan Medical Center, Ann Arbor. He also obtained a MS Degree in Statistical Analysis and Research Design from the University of Michigan. Dr. Beekman's academic interests relate to cardiac catheterization and intervention, and he has made numerous scholarly contributions in the field of hemodynamic assessment and transcatheter intervention for congenital heart disease. He has authored more than 180 manuscripts. Dr. Beekman is currently Chair of the Joint Council on Congenital Heart Disease (JCCHD) and member of the ACC Adult Congenital and Pediatric Cardiology Council.
Srikant B. Iyer MD, MPH
Dr. Srikant Iyer is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics with a joint appointment in the Division of Emergency Medicine and the James M. Anderson Center for Health Systems Excellence. Dr. Iyer graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1993 and earned his M.D. from the UNC School of Medicine in 1997. While pursuing fellowship training in pediatric emergency medicine, he obtained a Master's Degree in Public Health in 2005 from the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Iyer has served as the Improvement Advisor for the NPC-QIC since 2007, and recent effort has been directed toward improving measurement of infant growth and nutrition. Apart from activities related to NPC-QIC, Dr. Iyer serves as a leader in CCHMC's efforts to improve operations and patient flow in emergency department settings.
Thomas Klitzner MD-PhD is the is the Jack H. Skirball Professor of Pediatric Cardiology at Mattel Children’s Hospital and Executive Director of the Pediatric Medical Home Program at UCLA. He received his BA from Harvard University and a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from MIT. Dr. Klitzner subsequently received both MD and PhD degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. He trained in Pediatrics and Pediatric Cardiology at UCLA and joined the UCLA faculty in 1984.
Dr. Klitzner serves as Vice Chair for Academic Affairs for the Department of Pediatrics. He is Immediate Past Chair of the Executive Committee of the Section on Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and a member of the Implementation Committee of the National Pediatric Cardiology Quality Improvement Collaborative. Dr. Klitzner has extensive advocacy experience and is a Past President of the Children's Subspecialty Care Coalition, a coalition of approximately 2000 pediatric subspecialists in the State of California, which advocates for quality healthcare for children with special health care needs, and he is immediate past Chair of the Board of LA Care Health Plan, the largest Medicaid managed care health plan in the US.
Dr. Klitzner has published extensively in the areas of access, outcomes and evaluation of health care delivery systems for children with heart disease and other chronic, life threatening medical conditions. As the Executive Director and driving force behind the Pediatric Medical Home Program at UCLA he has achieved success in bringing the principles of the medical home and complex care coordination to the residency training program in the pediatric teaching clinics at UCLA.
John Kugler MD
Dr. John D. Kugler received his medical degree from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in 1974, and completed his pediatric residency at the University of Nebraska Medical School in 1976. He completed his fellowship in pediatric cardiology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Dr. Kugler specializes in arrhythmias and electrophysiology. He has published numerous articles in professional journal and given presentations on a variety of pediatric cardiology topics and has served on many national committees, most recently involved with Quality Improvement initiatives. He is Chief of the UNMC/CUMC Joint Division of Pediatric Cardiology at Children's Hospital & Medical Center. Dr. Kugler is D.B and Paula Varner Professor of Pediatrics and a Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine and Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the Creighton School of Medicine.
Carole M. Lannon, MD, MPH
Dr. Carole Lannon is Director, Learning Networks Core, James M. Anderson Center for Health Systems Excellence at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC), Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati, and Senior Quality Advisor for the American Board of Pediatrics. The Anderson Center has supported over 50 quality improvement learning collaboratives involving more than 1500 practices, hospitals and health systems, communities and professional organizations to improve care and outcomes. Dr. Lannon currently serves as the design and implementation lead for several improvement initiatives, including the National Pediatric Cardiology Quality Improvement Collaborative and the Ohio Perinatal Quality Collaborative. She is currently principal investigator of the pediatric Center for Education and Research in Therapeutics (CERTs), funded by the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality.
